Equinox - Simply Complex

This Equinox looks at the Nobel Prize winning physicist Murray Gell-Mann. Gell-Mann was a contemporary of Richard Feynman (they shared the same secretary at CalTech) and coined the 'Quark' model of elementary particles which he called 'the 8-fold way' - both names reflect his other interests (Quark was a word that originated from James Joyce and the 8-fold way was from Buddhism; Gell-Mann wanted to study archeology before he opted for physics). His second wife says he is also known to practice bush-man clicks when taking a shower.

In his later years Gell-Mann has shifted from exploring fundamental particles to exploring the relationship between the simple and the complex (popularly known as 'Complexity' theory) and developing a multi-disciplinary research centre for the purpose - The Santa Fe Institute (which the latter part of the film explores).

The threat of a nuclear war in the late 1940s and 50s prompted a leap in the capability of aircraft and defence systems.

This, together with developments in jet propulsion and the technical lessons learned from the Second World War, led to the development of a trio of extraordinary and beautiful aircraft: the V-bombers.

With swept, delta and crescent wings and names beginning with 'V' they captured the public imagination, and have remained objects of fascination ever since.

-2- H-Bomb

The dropping of nuclear bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945 changed the world forever - any nation that failed to harness the power of the atomic bomb suddenly seemed extremely vulnerable.

The concept of Mutually Assured Destruction - or 'MAD' - dictates that if two warring nations have access to nuclear weapons, then it would be folly for either side to use them - as the inevitable retaliation to a nuclear strike is, of course, a nuclear strike.

So it was that Britain needed to become a nuclear power, and the Hydrogen Bomb - or H-bomb - provided the ultimate destructive force.

-3- Blue Streak

While having access to nuclear bombs provides an immense advantage - they are still limited by the method of delivery - which for Britain in the early 1950s was the V-bomber.

Ballistic missiles provided the more effective solution, capapble of carrying nuclear warheads over vast distances, even between continents.

So in 1954, Britain began the development of Blue Streak, a mid-range ballistic missile capable of launching nuclear strikes at ranges of up to 3700 km.

Carluccio and the Leopard

Antonio Carluccio travels to Sicily to discover more about one of the most successful novels ever written in the Italian language, The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. Whilst tracing the locations that inspired the book, Antonio cooks the food that is such an integral part of the lives of its characters.

Giuseppe Tomasi, Prince of Lampedusa, who died in 1957, had seen his family fortune disappear during his lifetime. The Palermo palace he lived in as a child had been destroyed by American bombing in the Second World War and the family's country villa was reduced to rubble by an earthquake. Lampedusa was acutely nostalgic for the aristocratic world of his childhood and at the end of his life he wrote a novel, based on the life of his great grandfather, that recreated this lost paradise.

Basing himself in the kitchen of a 16th century villa, Antonio recreates the meals of the 1860s that Lampedusa describes with such artistry. He explores the history of Italian unification that forms the background of the novel and ventures into the vibrant city of Palermo to find the street food that is still an important part of the Sicilian way of life. Antonio discovers the way that food is central to Sicilian culture, with Greek, Arab, Norman and Spanish invaders all having contributed to the island's unique cuisine.

He also meets Lampedusa's adopted son and learns how this eccentric and impoverished nobleman died before his only novel was published, causing a sensation in Italy and sparking a national debate on the eve of the centenary of the unification it described.

After the Warming by James Burke

Set in 2050, Burke looks back at the events of the world going back to the dawn of civilization,and shows how the climate changes effected human history. At the point of the Industrial Revolution, humans started to do things to the climate, rather than the other way round. When he brings us up to date (1989), that is when the predictions begin. From Kyoto to the two Gulf Wars, Burke accurately predicts many of the events that have taken place so far. His predictions have been sound, even to the tune of carbon credits and climate change agreements.

For anyone who's seen "An Inconvenient Truth", you'll recognize the same theories, evidence and message in this much earlier work. But there is so much more. This program manages to include the entire environmental history of the world, but, coming from a future perspective, takes a good look at where we are now from a somewhat impersonal view.

Entertaining, enjoyable and packed full of information that's not dumbed down, but remains accessible. James Burke, as always, has a knack for making formidably complex issues understandable without talking down at you. Although an admirer of Al Gore's goals as an environmentalist, this is a far more intelligently organized and comprehensive piece of work.

The Mary Rose, built five centuries ago and named after the favourite sister of Henry VIII, was a forerunner of today's battleships. She was defending England against a massive French invasion force in 1545 when, without warning, she capsized and slid under the waves, taking over 400 men with her.

A team of experts from the fields of shipbuilding, science, history and archaeology gather to study the evidence and try to pin down the reason for the disaster. Using a scaled-down model of the Mary Rose, forensic scientists reconstruct the ship's last voyage, and a tragic picture emerges of her final moments.

Episode 2

On set in America, Tim speaks to porn actors who say they feel increasing pressure to undertake hardcore sex acts. He talks to the godfather of porn, Larry Flynt, and discovers that even he thinks porn is going too far.

However, there are more and more companies keen to cash in and collect porn's dirty dollars. A whistleblower tells him there is a Catholic investment fund that appears happy to profit from porn distributors, so he travels to Rome for a heated interview with the head of Christian Brothers Investment Services.

First Cut - Ashes to Diamonds

David Brindley's charming little film is about what happens to loved ones after they're cremated. Quite a lot, as it happens. First the metal bits are picked out – artificial hips, head staples, all that stuff. Then they're put into something called a cremulator that makes what's left less like bones and more like ash – people prefer it that way. And then it's up to the families.

Steve spent some of his time sitting in a plastic take-away container from the local chinese before a bit of him was made into a diamond. The rest of him went into went into shotgun cartridges which were blasted into the sky at a memorial shoot at his local gun club.

Chris who died in his twenties on a trip around the world has come home and now resides in a pendant around his little sister's neck, where he will stay for ever and ever. Finally George, who died just after coming home from a holiday in the Med, is now incorporated into a painting of a picture taken on his final trip - he's adding texture to the rock and sand.

Time Shift - Fashion versus the BBC

Documentary which takes a provocative and entertaining journey through the BBC's own fashion collection.

For 50 years the BBC has often treated fashion as a frivolous, decadent diversion from the serious matters of life, but now a 'style council' of fashion writers and commentators including Peter York, Colin McDowell, Ted Polhemus and Hilary Alexander turns the tables and lets British fashion take on the BBC.

In the 1950s we find programmes debating whether men should decide what women wear. In the 1960s we see Alan Whicker unleashed upon the 'silly, superficial world' of French couture, while the big story of Mary Quant is almost ignored back home. In the 1970s comes the revulsion against punk style, and it is not until the 1980s that TV treats fashion with any kind of appreciation with The Clothes Show, generally held as the BBC's finest hour in the world of dressing up.

The programme concludes that British fashion is unique in that it is driven more by youth culture than by fashion houses. Through the stories of the models, the designers, the photographers and the clothes themselves, it shows how the establishment has come to terms with the transformation of post-war Britain.

William G. Stewart’s journey to find the truth behind the life of his one-time mentor, the Labour MP Tom Driberg, opened with The Times’s obituary which ran after the Labour MP’s death in 1976. Driberg, it noted, "was a journalist, intellectual, drinking man, homosexual and many other things". Stewart’s achievement in this documentary was to analyse Driberg’s tumultuous, complex life with the warmth and nervousness of a truly curious friend.

He and Roy Greenslade, the media commentator, recalled Driberg first making passes at them (rebuffed, the two men are straight), before becoming a mentor to both. Stewart elicited brilliant nuggets on Driberg’s fast and furious sex life, his friendship with the Krays and his frustrated political career. His childhood had been so boring, he had seized every bit of excitement out of life, said his biographer Francis Wheen. Driberg was impossible, indiscreet, passionate, flawed, ambitious, frustrated, outrageous and, for all his showmanship, an enigma.

But for all this there was a darker side to Driberg's life. Stewart sets out to discover whether the rumours that Driberg was a spy for the Russians was true.

Legend has it that the triumphal march of television began in the United States in the 1950s but in reality its origins hark back much further. Nazi leaders, determined to beat Great Britain and the U.S. to be the world’s first television broadcaster, began Greater German Television in March 1935. Making use of 285 reels of film discovered in the catacombs of the Berlin Federal Film Archive, Television Under the Swastika is a fascinating look at the world’s first television broadcast network. Bruno Bettelheim (1903 – 1990) was a Jewish native of Austria who escaped as a refugee to the US before it entered World War II. There he continued his career as a child psychologist and writer. He was an internationally known figure, prominent for his studies of autism and success in treating emotionally disturbed children.

1. The Man who Cared for Children

In this documentary, Bettelheim talks about his treatment for emotionally disturbed children. Bettelheim served as director of a home that treated emotionally disturbed children. He changed it and created an environment for milieu therapy, in which children could form strong attachments with adults within a structured but caring environment. He claimed considerable success in treating some of the emotionally disturbed children. He wrote books on both normal and abnormal child psychology. He was a major influence in the field, widely respected during his lifetime.

Episode 2: Following the Pharaoh

Belzoni continues his journey in search of further treasures. His route takes him south to Abu Simbel where he makes the astonishing discovery of a temple. From here he travels north to the Pyramids, this time with Sarah. Together they find the hidden entrance to the second Pyramid, only to find the tomb void of its treasures. Disappointed, Belzoni writes his name on the tomb walls.

Back in London, it?s the year 1862. Sarah takes Antonia to the British Museum to see some of the riches that Giovanni had transported back. She draws Antonia?s attention to the significance of another artefact, the Rosetta Stone, inscribed with hieroglyphs, demotic script and Greek. It wasn?t until 1822 that a Frenchman, Jean Fran?ois Champollion, translated the Rosetta Stone and led the way to decipher hieroglyphic writing. But this was after the work of the Belzonis who could only guess at what the strange symbols meant.

Episode 3: Secrets of the Tomb

After the hope and excitement of Belzoni?s original discoveries, this episode takes on a more sombre note, reflecting on the deteriorating health of Burckhardt. We see Sarah nursing Burckhardt whilst Belzoni explores the Valley of the Kings and discovers the beautifully illustrated tomb of Pharaoh Seti I.

After his latest discovery and following Burckhart?s death, Giovanni returns to London with his wife, determined to make a living by recreating the tomb of Seti I for discerning members of Victorian society. However, curiosity about the exhibit is short-lived, leaving the Belzonis with no work and little money. Giovanni leaves in search of treasures in other parts of Africa, and Sarah never sees him again, for he contracts dysentary and dies. Her wish in life has always been to keep the memory of her husband?s work alive. This she does through Antonia and her little shabti figure.

Flesh and Blood - The Hammer Heritage of Horror

This was the last project that Peter Cushing completed before his death in 1994. He is heard in the off camera narration and seen only in film clips. Cushing's old friend Christopher Lee joins him in the off camera narration and in an on camera interview, as well as in film clips. The other interviews are candid and informative. Most of these people remember working for Hammer with real affection.

Hammer Films was the most successful independent production company in the history of the British film industry. Starting in the 1950's, they produced a memorable series of low budget science fiction and gothic horror films. These films were marked by high production values, solid technical work, strong acting, and intelligent writing and directing.

Their breakthrough came in 1957 with the release of THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN. This low budget film became one of the most profitable films in the history of British cinema, as well as the most influential genre film to be released since the end of the Second World War. Today, numerous film makers acknowledge Hammer Films as an influence on their work. They include, George Lucas, Stephen Spielberg, Martin Scorcese, Joe Dante, John Landis, and John Carpenter, to name only a few.

Ted Newsom, the writer and director of FLESH AND BLOOD has succeeded in capturing a moment in time when a number of the people who made these films were still with us. Now, a few short years later this is no longer the case.

The one drawback in this documentary is that the film clips are taken from trailers. This avoided paying fees to distributors, but limits the choice and quality of the footage. On the other hand, FLESH AND BLOOD is well organized and researched. It presents a view of a memorable era in British film production with clarity and insight. For anyone who is already a Hammer fan, this is a must. For anyone who is just getting acquainted with their films, this will serve as an excellent introduction.

His murders were particularly gruesome, involving rape, torture, dismemberment, necrophilia and cannibalism. On November 28, 1994, Dahmer was beaten to death by fellow Columbia Correctional Institution inmate Christopher Scarver with a bar from a weight machine while on work detail in the prison gym.

The Art Deco movement swept through Britain in the 1930s, bringing a little glamour to everyone's life. In this series, architectural historian David Heathcote explores and enjoys four of the best examples of Art Deco in Britain.

Claridge's

Heathcote checks into Claridge's Hotel in London's Mayfair and explores the Art Deco makeover of the 1930s, which transformed the old Victorian hotel into a fashionable destination for the rich and famous.

He enjoys the glamour of the Deco fumoir which made smoking sexy and glamorous, even for women, and samples the cocktail bar with Guy Oliver, the man whose job it is to renovate and restore the hotel's glamorous 1930s image.

Heathcote then settles into a perfect Art Deco bath complete with glass panels, bubble bath and two bell pulls - one for the maid and the other for the butler.

London Transport

David Heathcote explores the dramatic 1930s London Transport HQ in St James', London. When it was built in the1930s, it was the highest skyscraper in London. Heathcote goes behind the scenes and uncovers the story of a building so controversial that Frank Pick, who commissioned it, offered to resign from the London Underground Company, because there were so many complaints about its ambitious design.

The HQ became the nerve centre for an Art Deco transformation of the underground which remains today. David Heathcote ventures out on the Piccadilly Line to Southgate to investigate. For many, it is just the scene of a crowded journey to work, but Heathcote discovers a perfect example of a co-ordinated Deco look. The sleek tube station uses streamlined features, soft uplighting and chrome to create a glamorous overall effect. It may be lost on the commuters on their way to work, but for Heathcote it is a moment to stand back and enjoy the marvel that was Art Deco.

Casa Del Rio

David Heathcote goes to spend the weekend at Casa Del Rio - a remarkable Art Deco fantasy house hidden away in rural Devon. He uncovers the story of Walter Price, a baker from Devon who went to visit California in the 1930s and who was so impressed by Pickfair - the glamorous residence of Hollywood stars Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford - that he decided to create his own Deco mansion back in the Devon countryside, complete with marble staircase built to look like a piano keyboard.

Heathcote explores the house that was the perfect glamorous weekend retreat for Price and his friends and plays with some of the many Deco gadgets that brought glamour into so many people's lives in the 1930s - a perfect toaster, a Bakelite radio and even a cocktail shaker.

The original Pickfair mansion in California was demolished, so Casa Del Rio remains as a rare British example of a Deco fantasy house, built at time when Britain was in love with Hollywood, Art Deco and its glamour.

The Orient Express

David Heathcote boards the Orient Express at London's Victoria Station and heads off for Venice, first settling into his perfectly restored sleeping cabin and then exploring the decadent charm and the extraordinary history of the train.

He meets James Sherwood, the man who bought the Orient Express in the 1970s and who decided to restore the old 1930s carriages to their Art Deco glamour. At first, his wife Shirley 'thought he was mad', but she became charmed by the challenge of restoring the Decorative art of a romantic train.

After enjoying the luxury of the dining compartment, Heathcote retires to his cabin and wakes up as the train chugs through the Alps. He is joined by Bevis Hillier, the expert who coined the phrase Art Deco and who describes the remarkable spread of the movement across the world from its origins at an exhibition in France in 1925.

However, it is not all luxury - the train has no air conditioning and the washing facilities are a bit basic. So, at the end of 32 exhilarating hours immersed in Art Deco, Heathcote steps off the train at Venice and heads for a beer and a shower.

Liberal Democrat Mark Oaten experiences the dire housing conditions of Goresbrook Village in Barking and meets the residents disenchanted with mainstream politicians who have turned to the BNP. But he's upset when verbally attacked by local youths.

Conservative Tim Loughton finds out first-hand what some residents really think of politicians on the gang-divided Newtown estate in Birmingham.

Austin Mitchell and his wife Linda are shocked by poor living conditions and a drug problem on the Orchard Park estate in Hull.

And former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith learns a thing or two on the Carpenters estate in Stratford, East London.

Episode Two

The politicians are challenged to live on benefits and get a real insight into how low-income families cope day-to-day.

Without their usual generous expense accounts and with no staff to delegate to, some of the MPs struggle. There's a new MP too, as Conservative Nadine Dorries takes the place of Iain Duncan Smith. Having grown up on a council estate herself, Nadine initially thinks life on the South Acton estate in west London is easier than when she was a child. But she faces a rude awakening.

On Hull's Orchard Park estate, Labour veteran Austin Mitchell isn't keen to survive on benefits, but agrees to take on the child-care responsibilities of his host, unemployed chef Dave. And Austin's wife Linda throws a dinner party, but the residents seem unimpressed.

Tory Tim Loughton is taken aback when he moves in with a family of four (plus two dogs) living in a cramped one bedroom flat on Birmingham's Newtown estate, .

And in Barking's Goresbrook estate, Liberal Democrat Mark Oaten, an only child, finds moving into a household with five children and four cats a shock.

Episode Three

The politicians stay with people who need their help. But while some of the MPs relish the chance to get involved, others are less keen to roll up their sleeves.

In west London's racially-divided South Acton estate, Tory MP Nadine Dorries finds herself stuck in the middle as she tries to create harmony between residents and worshippers at a local mosque.

Helping residents of the Goresbrook estate in Barking demand answers from the council about their crumbling tower blocks, Lib Dem Mark Oaten gets caught up as police vans swoop to break up a disturbance.

In Hull, Labour veteran Austin Mitchell is asked to help find funding for a local youth project that works with hard-to-reach kids, some of whom are well-known to the police.

Tory Tim Loughton's host Adrian, feels trapped inside his home through fear of the gangs on the Newtown estate in Birmingham. Tim suggests a football match to give local kids something to do and to keep them away from a life of gangs and drugs. Later on, Tim faces a late night meeting with gang members.

Following the scandal surrounding MPs' expenses, Dispatches delves into the mostly unregulated world of political lobbying. The programme reveals how politicians are offering to help companies and lobby the government for salaries of up to £5,000 a day.

Journalist Antony Barnett leads an undercover investigation which examines:

- How senior politicians are seeking to trade on their Westminster connections to earn money from lucrative positions in the private sector.

- Whether the regulations safeguarding the public interest in this regard are both adequate and effective.

Dispatches set up a fictional US public affairs company and contacted several senior politicians and asked them if they were interested in a position on the advisory board of our bogus London office. The programme-makers contacted 20 politicians, 15 agreed to meet and ten were invited in for interviews. Nine of the interviews were filmed secretly and genuine issues of public interest arise from these: the public is entitled to know how retiring politicians see themselves and the services they are offering the corporate and business world in their life after Westminster.

Most suggested that our US company's clients could get privileged access into the corridors of powers; some agreed to help us win government contracts and lobby the right people. Some even boasted about what they have already achieved for private corporate interests while still serving as MPs.

Those politicians featured in undercover filming are Geoff Hoon, Stephen Byers, Patricia Hewitt, Baroness Sally Morgan, Margaret Moran and Sir John Butterfill.

It was said that the Pilkington case had provided a watershed moment to move disability hate crime up the public agenda, yet more often than not the voices of those who are persecuted because of their disability go unheard.

The Secret Treasury

The Treasury is the oldest and most secretive of the three. Cockerell's film recounts the many battles Chancellors have fought over the years with their top officials and it shows how often the Treasury has been locked in conflict with Number 10.

In this 2 part programme, Dispatches follows a class of final-year pupils at Barton Hill Primary School in Bristol as their staff adopt a radical approach to teaching, in a bid to improve the maths ability of these children before they head off to secondary school.

Part One

As research shows more than one in five children left primary school last year having failed to grasp basic maths skills, this documentary investigates shortcomings in Britain's education system and explores a radical approach to teaching in Bristol, which aims to better prepare youngsters for secondary school. Leading figures from the worlds of business and academia also discuss the issue and the programme presents the surprising results of a nationwide maths test taken by teachers.

Part Two

In this second programme, the SATs are over but many of the children have lost enthusiasm for the subject and still do not have a grasp of the basic building blocks for maths. Dunne returns to Barton Hill to help the children with their mental arithmetic and is joined by Countdown presenter Rachel Riley, who visits the school to help encourage the children to tackle their maths demons. Sitting in on a maths lesson, Riley is shocked that many of the children struggle to do sums in their heads and do not know their times tables.

The BBC and The Open University bring you a series with unprecedented access to the work of the barrister, their cases – from divorce settlements to murder - and the ambitious young men and women who aspire to join one of the most prestigious professions in the world.

It's a glamorous job which produces Prime Ministers, millionaires and the judges who shape our law, but the climb to the top is steep and difficult, thousands start on the road to become a ‘brief’ every year but just one in five will ever present a case in court.

The series follows students, Anna, Iqbal, Cat and Jo as they take their first steps on the Bar Vocational Course – a year at college costing around £12,000 – will any of them get a Pupillage (an apprenticeship in a set of barrister’s chambers)? And then there’s a Tenancy to be found before they can finally begin to practise in court.

While the backdrop may be steeped in history, tradition and etiquette, the challenges of the 21st Century are never far away. The government believes the legal profession is “outdated and insufficiently accountable” and is reducing the Legal Aid budget by millions of pounds, while searching for cheaper ways of prosecuting and defending cases. The Day the Immigrants Left

As an experiment, immigrant employees are temporarily removed from their jobs, and the work given to the local unemployed. Now the town's British workers have a chance to prove they can cope.

“Voice from the List” was produced to be included on the 2004 DVD release of “Schindler’s List.” The film presents the indelible true story of the enigmatic Oskar Schindler, a member of the Nazi party, womanizer, and war profiteer who risked his own reputation and even his own life to save the lives of more than 1,100 Jews during the Holocaust. “Voices from the List” is told exclusively from the testimony of survivors who owe their lives to Oskar Schindler and his list of “necessary workers.”

It is the perfect compliment to “Schindler’s List” because it introduces us to many of the actual people who survived the Holocaust thanks to Oskar Schindler.

“Voices from the List” was produced in association with The Shoah Foundation.

Humans are well-adapted to the physical conditions at the surface of the Earth. In response to an extended period of weightlessness, various physiological systems begin to change and atrophy. Though these changes are usually temporary, long term health issues can result.

Horizon looks at the discomforts an advantages of living in weightlessness.

Murder on the Lake

Joan Root, with her husband Alan, produced beautiful and famous natural history films, born of her deep love of Africa and its flora and fauna. This delicate but determined member of Kenya's Happy Valley was gunned down in January 2006 by intruders bearing AK-47s. Four men were charged with her murder, including David Chege, the leader of a private vigilante group Root herself had financed to stop the illegal fishing that was killing Lake Naivasha, the beautiful lake beside which she lived.

This film tells the story of the extraordinary life and brutal death of Joan Root, and of her campaign to save the lake she loved. Who killed Joan Root? Was it the fish poachers, whom Root stopped from plying their illegal trade in a bid to save her beloved Lake Naivasha?
